What is the difference of idle air control valve and map sensor regarding their function?

which of the two will give me a hard time when it comes to starting my automobile when they are defective?..what are the other effects on an automobile if these two parts are defective? What is the difference of idle air control valve and map sensor regarding their function?
The idle air control valve opens every time you shut off your engine. Basically giving your engine a vacuum leak. When you start your vehicle the computer picks up on the extra air and richens the fuel mixture giving it a faster idle upon initial start up. then the computer closes the valve to return to normal idle. It also increases idle speed when extra load on engine such as when you turn on the air conditioner. MAP stands for Manifold Absolute Pressure. Keeps a constant reading on manifold vacuum and regulates the fuel accordingly. either of these can cause hard starting. What is the difference of idle air control valve and map sensor regarding their function?
If the vehicle won't start you have to start from the basics. Check for fuel, air and spark. The timing belt or chain controls the valves that let the air in and out of the engine. They have to be timed correctly to allow compression to build up in the engine.

You can smell the fuel,
