What is the purpose of idle air control valve on an automobile?..?

yep, what Tim said. Because when the engine is not at idle the throttle plate is what is controlling the engine rpm. If the throttle is closed you need to regulate the amount of air going into the engine in order to regulate the rpm. What is the purpose of idle air control valve on an automobile?..?
An electrically-operated valve which allows air to bypass the throttle plate in a fuel injected engine to regulate engine idle speed. Basically it keeps the idle set just right.
